Jimmy Hannan was born on 25th August 1934 and died on 7th January 2019. He was an Australian radio and TV personality, variety show host, singer, entertainer and game show host of the 1960s and 1970s. One of the pioneers of television, he appeared regularly on Graham Kennedy’s variety show In Melbourne Tonight, and later hosted his musical variety show Jimmy, later called Tonight with Jimmy Hannan.

Jimmy Hannan Career

Hannan started his career as an 18-year-old appearing on the early Aussie TV classic Name That Tune in 1956.

Hannan was the host of music show Saturday Date from 1963 until 1967, which featured such performers as Billy Thorpe and Olivia Newton-John. He won the 1965 Gold Logie award for most popular personality on Australian television.

Hannan’s single (“Beach Ball”) featured The Bee Gees as backing vocalists. He worked on radio in Melbourne at The Greater 3UZ where he was a host of game shows such as Name That Tune and Celebrity Squares.

Hannan married his wife, Joanne Goode in 1959 and they  have been together until his death. They have four children.

Hannan retired from show business at 50 and died on 7th January 2019, aged 84 from cancer in Bellingen, New South Wales.

One of his daughters, Emily Gillman said “He passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer. He was 84 so he had a fantastic life.”
