Luiz Fernando Pezão Biography
Pezão earned his degree in Administration in the 1970s and became a politician in the 1980s, as councilor of Piraí. He then served two times as mayor of the town.
In 2006, Pezão was chosen by Sérgio Cabral, then-candidate to the governorship of Rio de Janeiro, to be his running mate. They won the election and Pezão took office as Vice Governor and State Secretary of Public Works simultaneously.
He assumed the office of governor due to the resignation of Sérgio Cabral, that at the time had plans to run for the Senate).
Pezão is a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement, one of the most powerful political parties of the country.

He was reelected governor in the 2014 gubernatorial election, running against former governor Anthony Garotinho, and the senators Lindberg Farias and Marcelo Crivella.
Luiz Fernando Pezão Arrest (Operation Car Wash)
On 28th November 2018, Police in Brazil arrested Luiz Fernando Pezão, the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro on allegations that he took bribes when he was deputy governor of Rio from 2007 to 2014.
Pezão has denied taking any illicit funds. He comes in as the latest politician to be detained as part Operation Car Wash, a corruption investigation which has resulted in the arrest of a long list of high-ranking politicians and businessmen.
Operation Car Wash is an ongoing criminal investigation being carried out by the Federal Police of Brazil, Curitiba Branch, and judicially commanded by Judge Sérgio Moro since 17th March 2014.
The allegations relate to the time when Pezão served as deputy for the then-governor of Rio, Sergio Cabral. Cabral himself is currently in prison after he was found guilty of money laundering and corruption last year.
Prosecutors say Pezão is suspected of taking 25m-reais-worth ($6.5m; £5m) in kickbacks between 2007 and 2015.
