Meng Hongwei was born in November 1953. He is a Chinese politician, police officer and the former president of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

On Thursday 4th October 2018, His wife, who is lives in France, where Interpol has its headquarters, reported him missing after she did not hear from him upon his arrival in China. The French authorities have opened an investigation.

On Sunday, 7th October 2018, China confirmed it is holding the missing head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei. Beijing said he was under investigation by the country’s anti-corruption body for unspecified breaches of the law.

Meng Hongwei Career

Meng served as Vice Minister of Public Security, and the Director of the China Coast Guard (2013–2017). On 18 March 2013, Meng was appointed Deputy Director of China’s State Oceanic Administration.

Meng Hongwei Detained in China

On 5 October 2018, his wife (Grace Meng) reported him missing to French authorities after  not hearing from him since he left INTERPOL HQ in the French city of Lyon for a trip back to China on 29th September 2018.

There are no any leads as to the sudden disappearance of Mr. Meng, even though he leads an organization that serves as a kind of United Nations for the world’s police forces.

Mr. Meng has remained a vice minister of China’s Ministry of Public Security while he serves as president of Interpol, and a page describing his background and activities remained on the ministry’s website on Friday, 5th September 2018.

In April 2018, the ministry disclosed that Mr. Meng was no longer a member of the Communist Party committee that oversees the ministry, a step that sparked speculation on overseas Chinese websites that he could be in trouble.

On Sunday, 7th October 2018, China confirmed it is holding the missing head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei. Beijing said he was under investigation by the country’s anti-corruption body for unspecified breaches of the law.

On the same day, Interpol said it had received his resignation from the presidency on Sunday with immediate effect.

China’s National Supervision Commission, which handles corruption cases involving public servants, said Mr Meng was under investigation in a statement on its website.
