Lakshmi Narayan Singh was born on 16th October 1944 and died on 28 July 2016. He was known professionally as Lachhu Maharaj, was an Indian tabla player of Benaras Gharana.

Lachhu Maharaj  Early life and training

Maharaj started training under his father, Vasudev Maharaj and began performing at an early age. As a child, his gifts caught the attention of legendary tabla player Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa, who was deeply impressed by Maharaj’s performance at just eight years old.

Maharaj father was Vausdev Narayan Singh. His sister Nirmala was the mother of actor Govinda. He married a French woman Teena, and they had a daughter, Narayani.

Lachhu Maharaj Legacy

In 1972, Lacchu Maharaj visited 27 countries on behalf of the Government of India. Along with his professional tabla performances all over the world, he was featured in films. He was nominated for the Padma Shri in 1972 but refused to accept it. He felt the appreciation of his audience was enough of an honour.

Lachhu Maharaj Death and Cause

Maharaj died in Varanasi on 28th July 2016, at the age of 72 years from an apparent heart attack. He was cremated on Manikarnika Ghat in the city on 29th July 2016.

Maharaj family received Condolences from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Politician Sonia Gandhi condoled his death and stating “His contributions to classical as well as the popular film genre would forever inspire artists in the years to come.”

Classical singer Girija Devi said it was an irreparable loss, and Maharaj knew the nuances of tabla-like no other artist.
