Shujaat Bukhari  Bio, Biography

Shujaat Bukhari an Indian Journalist and editor died on 14 June 2018 (aged 53 years old). Unidentified gunmen murdered him on 7:30 p.m. Eyewitnesses said four motorists wearing helmets and shalwar kameez showed up on two bikes outside the workplace of Rising Kashmir near Lal Chowk at 7.30pm just as Bukhari boarded his vehicle.

At the time of his murder, he was the chief editor of English-language daily Rising Kashmir, Urdu daily Buland Kashmir, and Kashmir daily Sangarmal, all under Kashmir Media House (KMH) in Srinagar. The paper is, as per a few records, the second-most powerful (English-dialect) daily in the state.

Shujaat was the President of Adbee Markaz Kamraz, a cultural and literary organization in Kashmir. He was instrumental in organizing a few Kashmir peace conferences and was part of the Track II diplomacy with Pakistan.

Shujaat Bukhari Murdered in Press Enclave

He was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his office in Press Enclave area of Srinagar. Shujaat was in his car when the assailants attacked him. They fired multiple time at his head and abdomen at close range.

His two police bodyguards were likewise killed, one on the spot and the other at the hospital while one civilian was also injured in the process.

CCTV footage

The police released CCTV footage of suspects believed to be in charge of the murder. One with his face covered in a helmet, and the other two covered with masks on a motorcycle. The police are asking the public to assist in identifying the assailants.

Shujaat Bukhari Family, journalistic Background

His brother, Basharat Bukhari, is Law Minister in Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s legislature, as per a report by Peerzada Ashiq in The Hindu report.

Bukhari was in his mid-fifties. He is survived by his parents, wife and two minor children, a young girl and a boy. His local town was at Kreeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla area, where his burial was announced to happen promptly after his murdering, as per the daily paper he worked for (Rising Kashmir).
