On 8 September 2018  Fatuma Zarika outclassed Mexican Yamileth Mercado to retain the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight championship title in a match played in KICC, Nairobi-Kenya.

In her Career, Fatuma have lined up in 42 fights, had 31 wins, 17 of which are knockouts, 12 losses with no knockout and 2 draws. Despite making history as the first Kenyan to ever win and defend a World Boxing Council (WBC) global title, Fatuma feels “dejected with no proper recognition and a measly purse.”

Fatuma Zarik  retains WBC title against Mexican Yamileth Mercado

On 8 September 2018, Kenya’s champion Fatuma ‘Iron Fist’ Zarika retained her WBC title. Zarika took on Yamileth Mercado of Mexico in the World Boxing Council (WBC) World Super Bantamweight battle at KICC, Nairobi.

Zarika garnered a total of 290 points to retain the title against her strong challenger who managed 280 points.

Zarika got 94′, 97′ and 99′ points respectively while Yamileth got 96′, 93′ and 91′ points in the same order as per the three judges who presided over the fight.

In 2017, she won the title by unanimous decision against Zambian Catherine Phiri  in Nairobi.

The boxer has two daughters, Halima and Sophia. She was only 15 years old, deprived and vulnerable when her ex-husband Said Omar fathered her two children.She is the daughter of a neglectful, polygamous father. She considers herself as the pioneer of women’s professional boxing in Kenya.

Fatuma Zarika has a younger brother, Musa Mohammed, a footballer who plays in defence for Gor Mahia FC.
