Antonio Halili Biography

Antonio Cando Halili was born on 8th February and died on 2 July 2018. He was A Philippine mayor of Tanauan, Batangas who was renowned for parading suspected drug dealers through the streets of his city (Tanauan, Batangas). Halili gained public prominence for introducing a ‘walk of shame’ parade of alleged drug dealers through his city of Tanauan after being elected mayor on 2013.

According to police reports, a total of 4,200 suspected drug dealers have been killed in the Philippines since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in 2016. Domestic and international human rights groups have however condemned the campaign.

In October 2017, Halili was stripped of his supervisory powers over local police due to a proliferation of illegal drugs in his city, amid allegations by the national police that he may have been involved. Halili denied the allegations.

During an interview with Reuters in August 2016 – in the second month of the drug cartels crackdown – he said he backed Duterte’s campaign but believed drug kingpins should be the main targets. Otherwise, thousands of people would be killed.

He expressed concern over the way police conducted the war on drugs and the reliability of their intelligence and the unverifiable claims that linked him to narcotics gangs.
