Elin Ersson Bio, Biography

Elin Ersson is 21 years old (as of 2018) Swedish student at the University of Gothenburg training to become a social worker. She has been doing voluntary works with refugee groups since 2017.

She came into the spotlight on Monday 23 July 2018, after streaming a live video on Facebook with an aim of preventing the deportation of an Afghan asylum seeker by refusing to sit down on the flight. Ms. Ersson bought the ticket for a flight from Gothenburg to Istanbul after she and other activists found out that an Afghan was going to be deported on the plane.

Elin Ersson plane protest stops a man’s deportation  to Afghan

Elin Ersson streamed live on Facebook on Monday, 23 July 2018.  Some irate passengers onboard could be heard shouting: “We want to go, sit down!” Ersson, remained standing steadily while taking a video of herself. A member of the cabin crew on the flight from Gothenburg to Istanbul repeatedly asks her to turn off her phone and sit down, or leave the plane. He describes her as an “unruly passenger”. Ersson, young and slight, stands her ground. “I’m doing what I can to save a person’s life,” she says.

The social work student at Gothenburg University bought the ticket for the Turkey bound plane from Gothenburg on Monday morning, after she and other activists found out that a young Afghan was due to be deported on it. The young Afghan was however not in the plane, but they found out a different Afghan man in his 50s was onboard for deportation.

More than two million people have now watched the video of Ersson’s protest where she successfully stopped the deportation of the asylum seeker.
