Andrew D. Gillum was born on 26 July 1979. He is an American politician serving his first term as Mayor of Tallahassee since 2014. Gillum became the youngest person ever elected to the Tallahassee City Commission in February 2003 at the age of 23 years.
His parents are Charles, his father and Frances Gillum, his mother a construction worker and school bus driver, respectively. Gillum is the fifth born in the family. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1998 and was recognized by the Gainesville Sun as one of the city’s “Persons of the Year.” He then moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU).

On August 28, 2018, Gillum became the Florida Democratic Party’s nominee for Governor of Florida when he unexpectedly won the Democratic primary election over a field of 5 other candidates including former congresswoman Gwen Graham, 34-31%.

He faced off the Republican Ron DeSantis in the Midterm election on 5th November 2018 for the Florida Gubernatorial Seat. He, however, fell short with a narrow margin of 1 % (Votes 99% reporting; 49.7%-4,052,118 for Ron DeSantis and 49% 3,996,679 for Andrew Gillum)

On the same Florida college campus where Andrew Gillum’s political career began as a student body president 17 years ago, the popular Tallahassee mayor and improbable candidate for governor conceded defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis late on Tuesday night.
“We may not have all shown up in the way that we thought and hoped that we would,” Gillum told a dejected crowd of supporters, “but I still believe in and trust the voters”.

R. Jai Gillum worked for state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, who was running to become Florida’s first female Governor in 2010 losing to Scott by a 1% margin. In May 2009, R. Jai married Andrew Gillum, a Tallahassee City Commissioner who in 2003 became was the youngest person ever elected to that position.
Asked about her name in an interview in 2003 she said; “My first name is Rashada, and Jai is my middle name, My parents were professors at Jackson State (University, in Mississippi). My dad named me Rashada after my father’s first student to get her Ph.D., a woman who was terminally ill.”
