Blake Nordstrom Biography

Blake W. Nordstrom was the oldest of three sons in one of Seattle’s most prominent families. Their father, Bruce, ran Nordstrom for several decades. Even after he retired, Bruce Nordstrom still went to work nearly every day and would have a weekly lunch with his three sons at the flagship store’s restaurant.

Blake Nordstrom, like his brothers, began working at the company at an early age as a stock boy and rose through the ranks. The business was co-founded by their great-grandfather, a Swedish immigrant, more than a century ago. The family turned a single store in Seattle into a company with hundreds of stores across the country and a market value of nearly $8 billion.

Blake Nordstrom grew up on Mercer Island, just outside Seattle. He was the captain at his high-school basketball team. He studied economics and rowed crew at the University of Washington. His father credits sports with helping his sons in business. “They are competitive guys,” Bruce Nordstrom wrote in 2007. “Today, running our company, they want to do something special on their watch.”

Although the family is wealthy, the father did not want to spoil his sons as they grew up. When Blake Nordstrom turned 18, his father proposed that he and the three siblings contribute in buying Jeep, splitting ownership four ways, according to the memoir. The father sprang for the insurance, though.

As a boy, Blake Nordstrom was interested in mechanical things like minibikes and go-karts. The family bought a 36-foot motor boat when he was in his early teens.

Blake Nordstrom’s mother, Fran, died of cancer in 1984. Bruce Nordstrom continued to be a large presence in his sons’ lives after they were grown. Blake wrote in a memoir about his father“You didn’t want to disappoint him, That felt like a knife in your side.”

All three brothers have served on the Nordstrom board since 2015, earned the same salary and held roughly the same stakes in the company. Blake Nordstrom played more of a chief-executive role in recent years, overseeing corporate functions and the off-price Nordstrom Rack stores.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom Inc. is an American chain of luxury department stores, also operating in Canada and headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Like other traditional department stores, Nordstrom has in the recent past struggled as shoppers make fewer visits to stores and do more shopping online. The chain, however, focused on luxury shoppers and was quick to invest in e-commerce, which accounts for about a quarter of its sales. As a result, the company has fared better than many bigger chains that have had to close hundreds of stores. In recent years, Mr. Nordstrom and his brothers had focused on one of their biggest projects: opening the chain’s first Manhattan store.

The family attempted to take the company private in 2017 but abandoned the effort after they were unable to raise enough financing.

Blake Nordstrom Cancer, Death and Cause

On 10th December 2018, Blake Nordstrom disclosed that he was diagnosed with lymphoma (A cancer of the lymphatic system). He died a month later on 2nd January 2019.

Blake Nordstrom Wife, Children

Blake Nordstrom is survived by his wife, Molly, a daughter and a son, as well as his father and brothers.
