Jo Andres Biography
Jo Andres was born on May 21st, 1954 and died on January 11th, 2019. She was an American filmmaker, choreographer and artist.
Andres came to the public limelight for the kinetic downtown New York performance scene of the 1980s for her film/dance/light performances, shown at the Performing Garage, St. Marks DanspaceLa Mama E.T.C., P.S. 122, and the Collective for Living Cinema. As a filmmaker, Andres drew acclaim and awards for the 1996 film, Black Kites which aired on PBS and played several film festivals, including Berlin, Sundance, Toronto, London and Human Rights Watch Film Festivals. Andres directed music and art videos, as well as her film performance works. Andres also worked as a dance consultant to the acclaimed Wooster Group.
Andres was an artist in residence at leading universities, museums and art colonies, including Yaddo, and The Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy. She created a series of cyanotype photographs which can be seen on her website.

Jo Andres was married to Steve Buscemi, who is an American actor, comedian, director, and former firefighter. He is also an Emmy-winning star of “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire”. The couple were married for 31 years (since 1987) until her death in January 2019.
Buscemi had previously been quoted stating that he penned love songs about Andres in his youth and became inspired after she left him to travel around Europe with an ex-boyfriend for a month.
She and her husband, actor Steve Buscemi, have one son, Lucian, born in 1990.
Jo Andres Death and Cause
Andres died on January 11th, 2019 aged 64. Radar Online was the first to report that Andres had tragically passed away. Around the time of her death, Aida Turturro (from “The Sopranos”) and her cousin John Turturro (who co-starred with Buscemi in “The Big Lebowski”) were spotted exiting the couple’s Park Slope brownstone on January 9th, 2019.
