John Cowell Arrested for Stabbing to Death Nia Wilson and inflicting a Knife Wound to her elder sister Latifa Wilson in a BART stabbing in Oakland
A passenger on BART captured the arrest of John Cowell which came 21 hours after he stabbed to death Nia Wilson and inflicted a knife injury to her elder sister, Latifa Wilson. Police Officers had intercepted the train at the Pleasant Hill BART station after getting tips from the public. The suspect was taken into custody without any incident.
The arrest comes as a huge relief for the Bay Area, where the random attack has triggered outrage and protest.
Bay Area Rapid Transit police on Monday, 23 July 2018 released three surveillance video images of Cowell, including one that shows him at MacArthur station Sunday night, when the Nia and her Latifa were stabbed on a platform after exiting the train.
The photograph shows Cowell wearing a gray and white tracksuit and carrying a backpack.
Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Chief Carlos Rojas said Monday that surveillance video shows 27-year-old Cowell striking the sisters and getting away. They found a knife at a construction site near the MacArthur train station they believe was used in the attack. He says it was an “unprovoked, vicious attack” and that officials have not determined a motive.
The chief also added that they are trying to determine what led to the attack. However, they have no information that it was racially motivated, but they are not discarding that factor as a possible motive. The Wilson sisters are black, and Cowell is white.
“Up to this point we don’t have any information that was race-motivated, but we can’t discard it.,” he said.
A cousin had previously identified 21-year-old Tashiya Wilson as the wounded sister, but authorities later said Latifa Wilson is the one that was injured in the incident.
