Oribe Canales Early Life, Parents
Oribe Canales was born in Havana. His parents were Oribe Juan Canales, an artist, and Gladys Miranda Canales. His family moved to Charlotte, N.C., when he was 6. At the age of16 in 1972, he moved to Miami to find work as an actor.
In 1974, he moved to Buffalo, where he gained experience as a hairdresser and earned his license. That was followed by a move to New York City to work for the well-known hairdresser Garren, in his Plaza Hotel salon.
Oribe Canales Career
In 1976, Oribe relocated to New York City from Cuba. It was while working at the Garren at the Plaza salon that Oribe received his first editorial credit, from the magazine GQ. He after that began working with photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist François Nars. Oribe established his first salon in New York City’s Upper West Side in 1987. In 1990, he opened a salon on the 10th floor of the Elizabeth Arden salon, on Fifth Avenue in New York City, after having been introduced to the cosmetics company by the model Vendela.
Oribe worked as a hair stylist for fashions shows such as Versace, Thierry Mugler, Calvin Klein. He is also known for having given a new look to supermodels such as Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford.
Oribe Canales Death and Cause
Oribe Canales died on Monday morning 17th December 2018, in Manhattan. He was 62 years old as at the time of his Death. According to his husband, Zaki Amin Oribe suffered liver and kidney failure in a hospital after going to New York for cancer treatment on November 2018.
Along with his husband, Zaki Amin, Oribe is survived by his mother; his brother, Francisco Canales; and his sister, Gracie Canales Cuervo.
